Ear Wax Removal via Micro-suction in Newcastle upon Tyne
Hard, impacted earwax can have severe negative effects on our health & well-being.
Although earwax helps protect your canal from infection, injury and foreign objects,
too much wax buildup can cause problems such as hearing loss, dizziness and
feeling like your ear is blocked or full.
With microsuction, years of excess wax buildup can be gently removed – instantly
improving a person’s quality of life.
What is Microsuction?
The microsuction technique uses a microscope to look into your ears, combined with
gentle suction to clean the ear. Microsuction is considered the safest method of ear
wax removal, including syringing and irrigation as it is a completely dry and sterile
procedure. Therefore, infection risk is reduced compared to such water methods.
Is Microsuction Painful?
Not particularly, although some may find the treatment slightly uncomfortable as you
may feel some strange sensations and it can be noisy once suction has started.
However, the treatment is quick, usually lasting no longer than twenty minutes for
both ears.
Do I need to do anything before my appointment?
Softening the wax by the use of olive oil spray is recommended. It would be
beneficial to oil your ears twice a day for 1-2 days before the procedure. Please be
aware, that an ear may feel more occluded following the application of an ear wax
softer. This is due to the expansion of the ear wax. For some, it may also induce
fluctuations in their hearing and mild discomfort or irritation.
What can I expect on the Day of my Appointment?
Our microsuction ear wax removal nurse Emma, will begin with a thorough
consultation. This is to get a better understanding of the health of your ears. She will
then examine your ear canals and ear drums by using an otoscope. These steps
ensure it is safe to go ahead with the procedure.
Emma will also explain the procedure in detail, ensuring you know what to expect
and what equipment will be used.
Microsuction takes on average 20 minutes for both ears. However, some people may
only need one ear cleaning. We can determine this from inspecting the ears and
photos will be taken before, so you can see the build up of wax on both ears. Photos
of your ear will also be taken after the procedure. It would be wise to allow 40
minutes for your appointment time.
